Out of the Ordinary
Unusual Places to Stay in North Cornwall

There’s so much more to Cornwall than meets the eye; it’s crammed with little known gems to discover such as hidden hamlets, secret beaches, traditional harbours and tropical gardens, which makes it the perfect destination for explorers and adventurers. And if you’re looking for somewhere a little out of the ordinary from which to base your explorations, we have some wonderfully unusual properties which are sure to pique your interest!

Romantic Retreats

Ooh La La Shepherd’s Hut and Poppet Gypsy Caravan

For a romantic get-away in truly unique accommodation, Ooh La La Shepherd’s Hut and neighbouring gypsy caravan Poppet fit the bill! Situated within peaceful wooded grounds yet only one mile to the beach, these two beautifully unusual units offer a different kind of holiday to the norm.

Ooh La La Shepherd’s Hut has been hand built and lovingly crafted by the owner to create a calm and tranquil space for two. Double glazed and fully insulated, the hut also has a wood burning stove to keep it cosy all year round.

Neighbouring Poppet, the only other accommodation on site, is a gorgeous traditional gypsy caravan, beautifully restored and furnished to sleep two, providing a perfectly peaceful retreat. Close by the two properties is the shared shower room, fitted within a converted classic van, and a shared cooking and chill out area in a glass fronted timber lodge.

Environmentally Aware

Gart Eco Lodge and Gart Eco Ark

Situated on serene Silverbow Park in landscaped grounds amongst acres of meadows, peaceful farm lanes and countryside footpaths, the Gart Eco Lodge and Eco Ark offer beautifully comfortable and environmentally conscious self-catering accommodation. Built entirely from untreated Cornish eco timber which contains no toxins, and green turf roofs, every effort has been made to create these buildings with limited impact on the environment.

Both the Lodge and the Ark have been fitted with solar tubes to heat the water, wood burning stoves, and natural temperature control all year round means that they stay cool in the summer and cosy in the winter. The Gart Eco Lodge sleeps up to six people (four in bedrooms plus a double sofa bed in the sitting room) in this spacious and contemporary wooden cabin. In the centre of the room a bare tree trunk support makes a striking and unusual feature beneath the stunning pinewood eaves, and bamboo flooring runs throughout the property.

The Gart Eco Ark sleeps two in an inviting double mezzanine bed beneath the curved pinewood ceiling, reached by a wooden ladder. The living space below is cleverly designed and well-equipped, including a small kitchen, wet room, double sofa bed for additional guests and TV and DVD player.

On-site facilities include an outdoor heating swimming pool (in the summer season), all weather tennis courts and short mat bowls. Table tennis and pool are available in the games room and fresh eggs from rescued battery chickens can be bought from the site shop. There is no club house or bar as Silverbow offers a peaceful retreat from the main holiday hustle and bustle.

Peace and Quiet

The Designer’s Loft

Set in a secluded and peaceful location at the end of a quiet lane, The Designer's Loft is a charming apartment covered in beautiful Virginia creeper and surrounded by three acres of landscaped mature gardens, a trout stream, lily pond and croquet court. It is situated next to the only other two properties in the valley: the owner's house, and The Granary, a small cottage which can also be booked with Duchy Holidays.

The apartment has beamed ceilings throughout, lots of light, and a balcony with outdoor furniture offers wonderful views of the gardens. The entrance into the property is decorated with posters, pictures and awards showcasing the owner’s long and distinguished career as a film designer which makes for fascinating reading for film aficionados.

Reverse Style Living

Chymorvah, meaning the ‘House by the Sea’ in Cornish, is a beautiful, light and spacious new-build less than ten minutes' walk to Perranporth's spectacular three mile beach. Built as an ‘upside down’ reverse level house, this beautiful home has been built to a high specification, fully equipped and wonderfully comfortable.

There are four bedrooms and three bathrooms on the ground floor and a spacious open plan kitchen, dining room and sitting room on the first floor with floor to ceiling windows framing the fabulous view across the village to the beach and sea.

Period Family House

Lowenek House

Located in an enviable position only 100 metres from the golden sands of Perranporth's beach, and moments from the shops and restaurants, Lowenek House is a spacious, comfortable family period house to sleep eight.

Built by a local Perranporth builder in the 1930’s for his own family, the house still boasts original 1930’s art deco features including tiled fireplaces, a hardwood hallway floor and the original hexagonal Bakelite door handles. The builder was also the local undertaker in Perranporth at the time and he made some of the very first surfboards in the country, from coffin lids!

Outstanding Natural Beauty

Trenerry Cottages

Primrose, Cherry Tree and Meadow Cottages

Set in stunning surroundings on the north Cornish coast, these wheelchair accessible cottages are midway between National Trust owned Chapel Porth beach and the picturesque village of St Agnes. The countryside around the properties is classified as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is the perfect place to escape the rat race!

Ideal for walkers who want to explore the coastal paths and country lanes on foot, there are also two acres of fields with a dog track (two dogs can be accepted all year round, with prior arrangement). All three of the Trenerry Farm Cottages are suitable for wheelchair users, arranged on one level with widened doorways, ramps from the parking area into the buildings, walk-in showers and fitted handrails.
