Celebrating Mother's Day

8th March 2018

As the spring flowers tentatively begin to brighten the flowerbeds and verges, and the sun makes a cautious appearance, we’re starting to look forward to longer days, lighter evenings and the arrival of spring – and are hoping that Sunday 11th March will be a sunny spring day on which to celebrate Mother’s Day this year!

Originally a day when domestic servants were given the day off to return to their ‘mother’ church, Mothering Sunday was often the only day families had when they could all get together. Children would pick wild flowers on the way to the church service and the religious connotations of this traditional day have gradually evolved into the secular celebration of mothers that Mothers’ Day is now known for.

Many of us in the office are mums - and of course Duchy Holidays is run by dynamic mother and daughter duo Denise and Michelle - so we are wholeheartedly in agreement that mums deserve to be treated for a day!

If your mum would like to go to church on Mothering Sunday, there are two Church of England churches in Perranporth: St Michael’s Church in the centre of the village and the beautiful Perranzabuloe St Piran church up at Penhallow which was built using some of the stones and features from St Piran’s original 11th century church in the sand dunes.

There is also a Methodist church on Ponsmere Road in Perranporth and a timber clad Catholic Church on Wheal Leisure containing some stained glass work from Buckfast Abbey.

To treat your mum to lunch or tea out, there are any number of places in Perranporth and St Agnes for a delicious lunch, Sunday carvery, or cream tea, depending on her preference!

After lunch why not enjoy a clifftop or woodland walk, or plan a visit to one of Cornwall’s many stunning gardens? There are beautiful spring magnolias and other gorgeous floral displays at this time of year.

Whatever you decide to do, we wish you all a very special happy family day!

If you're visiting Cornwall for Mother's Day this year, we have a large selection of self catering holiday cottages and apartments; just give us a call for more info and availability: 01872 572971, and we'll be happy to help!
