Storm Watching on Cornwall's North Coast

Storm Watching on Cornwall’s North Coast

Winter in Cornwall can be exhilarating: the wind whisking you along the beach, the heavy crash of the waves, the vast open expanse of sand and sea. And when a storm comes in there’s not much that beats cosying up in a pub and watching the raging elements from your warm and comfortable window-side seat.

Here are some of our favourite storm watching spots on Cornwall’s north coast:

The Seiners, Perranporth

Perched on the edge of Perranporth’s huge beach, when the tide comes in the sea rushes right past The Seiners and has been known to crash over the car park wall on particularly stormy nights. Meanwhile you could be watching from the window, warm and dry in this lovely traditional pet-friendly bar.

The Watering Hole, Perranporth

Located actually on the beach (the only bar on the beach in the UK), The Watering Hole provides an ideal storm watching spot, so close, you’ll feel you’re in the eye of the storm… only you’ll be nice and cosy in front of the fire!

Alcatraz, Perranporth

A new café/bar in Perranporth, Alcatraz is built on the rocks at the bottom The Dunes development. At high tide the rock is surrounded on three sides by the sea, which can completely cover the bridge at the bottom and surge around the base of the rocks.

Lewinnick Lodge, Pentire

A cliff top restaurant on the Pentire peninsula in Newquay, on the edge of the Atlantic, Lewinnick Lodge has panoramic sea views. Enjoy delicious food and fine wines by the fireside while watching storms blow in

The Headland Hotel, Fistral

One of the most recognisable and iconic hotels in Cornwall, The Headland luxury hotel and spa overlooks Fistral Beach, perfectly placed to watch storms whip up the waves in the winter.

C-Bay, West Pentire

A lovely café, bar and bistro with spectacular views across Crantock Beach and the coastline beyond, C-Bay Café is right by the South West Coast Path, ideal for a blustery wintery dog walk followed by afternoon tea overlooking the Ocean.

The Beach Hut, Watergate Bay

Walk straight in off the beach at Watergate Bay to The Beach Hut, a laid-back café with a wall of sea-facing windows and cosy corner snugs to curl up in with a hot chocolate and enjoy watching the full force of nature.

Beach Bar, Lusty Glaze

If you’re up for an adventure, discover The Beach Bar at Lusty Glaze, near Newquay. Nestled in a secluded cove, visitors have to descend 133 steps to the beach. But the two roaring log burners, winter warmers, and breathtaking view make it worthwhile!

If you like the sound of a winter break in Cornwall, Duchy Holidays have fabulously located beach-side properties with exceptional sea views, and many self-catering options with open fires or log burners to curl up in front of after a windy wintery walk.

We still have availability for a last minute seasonal Christmas by the coast!
